Connecting With People Through Copywriting With Copywriting Legend Bond Halbert

Every business needs copywriting to reach its prospective customers. But what separates great copywriting from the bland? It’s not about the eloquence or expansive vocabulary you use but connecting with people. The people are at the heart of every great copy. There is a world of difference once you understand what people are looking for. It all starts with you—from how you experience life and everything around you to the opinions you form around products and services.

At the end of this podcast, entrepreneurs can learn how to use the power of copywriting to provide solutions and value to their customers. Our guest, copywriting legend Bond Halbert, shares his story about how he continues to build on his father’s copywriting legacy and making a name for himself. One of his main takeaways in this episode includes understanding the underlying motivations and reasons behind what people say. Once you understand why people would like to buy certain things, it’s easier to create campaigns that will solve their problems or persuade them to make a purchase. Bond shares that it’s not about selling the product. It’s about building relationships and connecting with people—your customers and prospects.

Join us in this journey of continuous self-improvement and making a difference in other people’s lives through business. Tune in and learn some great insights to level up your copywriting and marketing and start connecting with people!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

Episode Highlights

How Bond Started in Copywriting

  • Bond was trained by his father at an early age. After getting a degree in international business administration, he went on to work for the Giorgio Armani Corporation.
  • Eventually, he realized that this path was not for him and quit. After that, he went to work with his father.
  • Bond went on to create the most financially successful venture for his father. Later on, he worked with his brother in designing financial campaigns for other people.
  • Gary taught Bond everything he needed to know, and in turn, Bond added his own experiences, learnings, and insights.
  • Tune in to the full episode to learn more about Bond’s relationship with his father and how that affects his life and relationships now.

Cementing the Halbert Legacy

  • Bond went into a depression after his father’s passing. He decided to secure his father’s legacy by building on his work.
  • Bond was in the perfect position to do so, not only being Gary’s son but also understanding his father’s principles perfectly.
  • Through the years, Bond built a name for himself in the copywriting and marketing industry. His focus is on the big idea in hooks and solutions.
  • In addition to his copywriting work, Bond loves connecting with people and helping them improve their copy, and bring businesses to the next level.
  • Our guest shared how his name attracted the Russian mafia in the full episode.

Learn from Everything

  • People often learn from experts to get better at their craft, but true experts will learn from anything and everything.
  • If you want to have an interesting thing to say, you need to be interesting yourself.
  • You can pick up insights in every aspect of your life, including the radio, movies, and shows.
  • The first step in being a good marketer is connecting with people and understanding what they care about.

How to Study Your Prospects

  • Understand that you are much like your prospects. When your promotions are dying, the easiest way to revive them is through trying a new list of prospects.
  • Research is a fundamental part of copywriting and marketing. Understand what people’s pain points are.
  • Domino’s was able to release a delivery at 30 minutes or less campaign because they understood how their customers value reliable delivery time.
  • In this case, it didn’t matter how you worded the campaign. What made it effective was the offer.
  • Know the important factor that is not being delivered in the market, and you will easily outcompete your competitors by connecting with people.

Experience Being the Prospect

  • Get over yourself, and be honest with your emotions and experiences.
  • Tune in to your real self, and develop candidness.
  • You need to try products and services yourself to see what you think and feel about them. Chances are, other people have the same experience.
  • You also need to admit uncomfortable reasons too. No one needs Rolex watches, but they have come to symbolize showing off.
  • No one will want to admit this, so marketers need to find a way to paint fantasies for people and better excuses to get certain products.

Find Experiences and Reviews

  • Once you open yourself to this kind of thinking, you can put yourself more easily into your prospects’ shoes.
  • If you want to sell new phones, start by getting them yourself. But your experience is not complete. Test it out, and then get other people’s experiences.
  • You can go to Amazon to check product reviews, Yelp for service reviews, and Alexa for demographic profiles. Through this, you are connecting with people.
  • Understand the language being used in both positive and negative reviews. The copy basically writes itself through this method.
  • Bond shared an example of developing a copy in the full episode.

Connecting with People through Copywriting

  • Copywriting is about connecting with people.
  • Writing great copies is often based on how well you understand people.
  • This involves knowing how much people are willing to spend, what they care about, and what emotions they have.
  • Learn to see the underlying reasons behind language, reviews, and purchases. Try creating a checklist for these.
  • Bond writes with certain people in mind. This makes your writing more personalized and friendly.

How to Make Copies Interesting and Friendly

  • Don’t be afraid to have a target demographic. You can’t serve every person, but you can continue connecting with people.
  • There’s a difference in language when you start to treat copywriting as building relationships and friendships instead of just selling.
  • Start by imagining writing to a close friend. Make the copy personal so that it can create a bond.
  • Make information interesting, entertaining, and easy to understand. Be a friend to your prospect.
  • Neil deGrasse Tyson and Bill Nye can build a huge following because they make science interesting and not intimidating.

Timeless vs. Special Promotions

  • Create an evergreen marketing funnel connecting with people instead of just depending on special promotions. More importantly, find what makes sense and what works in your industry.
  • Marketing is about experimenting and trying. There are no absolutes in marketing.
  • For example, great books will often get high sales at first but trickle off over time.
  • You can create a strong list through promotions, such as webinars, replays, social media posts, and other people’s products!
  • In the full episode, Bond shared how he created a promotional system that kept his book as a number one seller.

Treat Customers as Real Friends

  • Bond shared that he has always wanted a smaller version of the Boron Letters to fit inside his bag. This led him to create the travel edition of the book in time for his father’s birthday.
  • He also wanted to treat hardcore fans and printed limited editions of the book to give away.
  • This promotion was all about connecting with people and treating loyal customers to something special. Consequently, it also led to increased sales for the regular edition of the book.

Mean What You Say

  • Plan out promotions for the long run. Become a classic rather than a trend.
  • Try new things, and see if they will work. You don’t make one thing and hope it will go viral; it takes several tries.
  • Many people create products and slowly start discounting them over time.
  • Don’t make anyone feel dumb for getting things at a higher price. Create value that will appreciate over time.
  • Be honest and genuine with your customers; don’t lead them on. Take care of your reputation.

Create an Honest Business

  • There will always be bad reviews for everything. Don’t let that stop you.
  • Be kind to others, and create policies that will benefit them.
  • Bond shared the example of making a longer-term return policy to decrease pressure on people.
  • Don’t go into a business thinking about how much money you want to make. Focus on the relationships and integrity of the business.
  • Think about the long-term state of the business over its immediate state.

The Gary Halbert Letters All-Star Audio Series

  • Gary, together with his brother and another guy, created a dream team of marketers and copywriters they wanted to learn from for a marketing program.
  • Now, the Gary Halbert Letter has gained more traction after being handled by great marketers and big names who added their own commentary to it.
  • People can see if you have the energy and passion for something. When you do, people become thankful for what you do.

Two Powerful Quotes

“To be really entertaining and to be a fascinating person isn’t about writing really well. It’s about having something interesting to say. And if you want interesting things to say, you want to be an interesting person.”

“Marketing is about experimenting and trying this and that. When something works, you kind of figure out why it worked and try and replicate it.”

About Bond

Bond Halbert is a leading copywriter and marketer. He is the son of Gary Halbert, who is widely considered as the greatest copywriter who has ever lived, having many record-crushing promotions than any other copywriter. With a thorough and direct education from his father, Bond continues the family legacy in copywriting with the best direct marketing and copywriting products in the market. Bond wrote The Halbert Copywriting Method Part III and updated his father’s book The Boron Letters, including the now-famous The Gary Halbert Letter All-Star Audio Series

Through the years, Bond has built a name for himself by heading some of the largest financial promotions of our time and pioneered tactics to get the highest email rates in any industry. After 40 years of watching his father teach copywriters and training them himself, Bond has perfected his technique to write effective copy and outperform any competition.

Discover the Secrets of Successful Entrepreneurs on Fire

John’s Life Before Podcasting

  • John loved having fun and enjoying life.
  • He was never an entrepreneur before venturing into podcasting.
  • His first real venture was his podcast, Entrepreneurs on Fire.

Recurring Theme Among Successful Entrepreneurs on Fire

  • First, the most successful people found a mentor. It must not be any mentor, but somebody who is where you specifically want to be.
  • Second, quoting Jim Rohn, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
  • Look at the people around you and avoid those who are just wasting your time. Open the door and let in the amazing people.
  • Third, educate yourself. The most successful people always want to improve and learn.

Insights on Formal Business Education

  • For John, formal education pushes the buck down the road. You risk acquiring debts.
  • You are wasting time because you are not doing the thing you want to do. Instead, you must learn from people who are actually doing it.
  • If you have a college degree, you have gone far enough.
  • Do not start accruing the entrepreneur’s biggest enemy, which is debt.

On Staying Focused

  • F.O.C.U.S. stands for “follow one course until success.”
  • When John started podcasting, he had no online presence, but he was focused.
  • When you are focused, you will figure out a way to do things.
  • Be excited and start your momentum.

How to Prioritize

  • John believes in Pareto’s Principle. This principle suggests that 20% of your activities will account for 80% of the outcome.
  • Ask yourself what your 20% is. Does it provide your desired outcomes?

Success Habits for Entrepreneurs on Fire

  • Get better every day. Take little steps.
  • These little steps will end up being something massive down the road.
  • At first, John did not have a successful podcast.
  • Take the first step and build upon that day by day.

Overcoming Challenges

  • The road is not going to be easy. You have to make sacrifices.
  • Know the sacrifices you have to make and be willing to do them.

John’s Future Projects

  • John is working on his first physical product.
  • The journal is called Freedom Journal: Accomplish Your #1 Goal in 100 Days.

Other Business Insights

  • It is always about going back to the basics and keeping things simple.
  • “If you want to be, do.” You have to do that thing you want and be willing to be bad at it.
  • According to Malcolm Gladwell, you need 10,000 hours of practice to become world-class in a particular field. Start working on your 10,000 hours.

  • At age 13, Ben’s parents were able to get him a second-hand computer where he taught himself to program and write software.
  • At 16, he used this knowledge to help a business owner restore access to their computer system. The owner later encouraged Ben to start his own company.
  • At 21, Ben started his own IT company.
  • Ben developed an interest in online marketing when he saw its potential to make more money than what he was currently making.
  • From here, he investing in books to learn more about the world of marketing, particularly online marketing.

Ben’s Philosophy in Business

  • Expect disasters to happen daily.
  • When something goes wrong, see how you can solve that problem. Turn that problem into an opportunity.
  • Write down 10 things you can do to solve that problem. The difference is making massive focused action toward solving a specific problem.
  • A sense of urgency and focus is what can make you earn large amounts of money. Tune in to the full episode to learn how Ben applied this philosophy to turn his company around.

How to Maintain Focus and a  Sense of Urgency

  • If you don’t get it done today, then it’s gonna be all over.
  • Work every day to never be in a losing position ever again.
  • Never betray the behaviors that brought you where you are.

Being Less Afraid of Failure

  • The feeling of failure never goes away; you have to get up every day and keep moving forward.
  • If you’re in business, you have to keep pushing no matter what.
  • But remember, you need to be focused so you don’t run in the wrong direction.

Key Habits of a Successful Entrepreneur

  • Observe both successful and unsuccessful people.
  • If something goes wrong, sit down and think, “How could I have prevented that?” And, “Am I approaching that the wrong way?”
  • Emulate the habits of successful people, not their marketing or business models, but their lifestyle.
  • Increase your productivity by three hours a day, then compound that over 10 years. The success you can get from those little things compounds over time.

Weed Out the Bad Habits

  • What you do defines who you are as well. Every time you take on a habit, that defines you as a person.
  • You don’t want to get to the point where you find it so difficult to change a bad habit.
  • Pick up on your bad habit straight away; you don’t want to leave it until it becomes a problem.

How Ben Grew His Company

  • Scalability is critical. The average small business can’t grow to $10 million, because there’s no real infrastructure.
  • You’ve got to play a different game, and you’ve got to play the right game.
  • You need to think about your target market when generating leads. You need to know them better than they know themselves.

How You Can Understand Your Target Market Better

  • You always want to approach anything in life or business from a philosophical point of view, not from a strategic or tactical point of view.
  • Think about how you’re going to write an impactful letter to someone so that they’ll take action. This is what copywriting, marketing, and advertising are about.
  • A crucial skill to have is empathy. You need to ability to step into the shoes of your target market.
  • Identify and communicate the impact that your product or service can bring to your target clients.

Collaboration Not Competition

  • Pooling resources together with your competitor may sometimes be the smarter choice.
  • It’s better to have a smaller piece of a larger pie than have the entire pie to yourself.
  • When you collaborate, you make a project or business more about the customer.
  • If you work hard and in silence, your results will speak for themselves.

Being Laser Focused

  • If you focus a laser on one point on a piece of paper, the paper will burn. The opposite can’t be said for when you spread the laser out.
  • And so, the only way to get to success is to be laser-focused.
  • You can tell how successful somebody is by how many things they’re doing. If you’re only doing one or two things at the very most, you’re doing very well.
  • Once you have a goal, see it through.

What the Future Looks Like for Ben

  • Ben is working on building a legacy and investing in companies that will outlive him.
  • Ben is also open to mentor others.

The Best Type Client

  • Ben enjoys working with those who have a good attitude and accept that they don’t know everything.
  • Getting a mentor means that you want to get the perspective of someone who’s achieved what you want to achieve.
  • Remember that one of the biggest life lessons is to be open to new possibilities.

Two Powerful Quotes

“I'm fully prepared mentally to say, ‘Well, let's deal with that. I expect that to have happened; how do we make the best of that?’ And we then, we move forward, and move forward.”

“If you're in business, you have to keep pushing no matter what; you can't put take the pedal off, you can't take your foot off the pedal, I mean. You got to keep going. And but at the same time, you've got to have the right direction, the right focus. Because if you're just running, running really fast in the wrong direction, it's going to make things a hell of a lot worse.”

Or https://www.members.bestbusinesscoach.ca/success-research/ for more on the research behind it.

Transcript:

Traditional business plans use some combination of these 9 sections:
1. Executive Summary.
- Brief description of what a company is, the plan & why will it be successful?
2. More Detailed Company Description.
3. Market Analysis.
4. Organization & Management Plan.
5. Service/Product Line.
6. Marketing & Sales Plan.
7. Funding Request.
8. Financial Projections.
9. Appendix/Conclusion.

On top of that, make sure you cover the:
Situation analysis.
The market positioning, marketing objectives & your strategy.

I've spent over $50,000 dollars to have the body of research reviewed.
To find what makes the difference for small & medium-sized businesses.
We found there are 8 Critical Success Factors for small & medium-sized businesses.

1. Self-Efficacy.
2. Strategic Planning.
3. Market Intelligence.
4. Marketing Strategy.
5. Sales Strategy & Skills.
6. Money Management.
7. Business Operations.
8. Business Intelligence.

These are 8 things I think belong in your plan because each is critical.
I'll give you have a brief overview of them now.
But go to BestBusinessCoach.ca for more info on them.

1. Self Efficacy.
Is about personal effectiveness.
It's the ability to wake up, plan your time & manage yourself to get things done.
It's the ability to articulate your vision & goals.
To work well with others.
This factor is important as it matters to you.
Plus everyone in your company.
When the people in your company are not being effective.
They will not be as productive as they could be.
This results in less than optimal performance.
Self-efficacy is the pillar everything stands on.
Because if the people in your company aren't getting anything done...
You're not going anywhere.

2. Strategic Planning.
This is important.
For example, No one is selling pet rocks anymore.
But once upon a time, they were a trend.
It was an easy thing to sell.
There were a lot of knock-offs.
But it was a trend and then disappeared.
A strategic plan makes sure there's longevity in what you're doing.
It makes sure what you're going to offer is not redundant.
Or not about to be redundant.
A strategic plan ensures you are jumping in a swimming pool with water.
It'd surprise you how many people start businesses doomed to fail.
Like jumping into a pool with no water.
They did not check first.

3. Market Intelligence.
This knowing who the competitors are.
What other options are available for consumers.
What do consumers like/dislike?
What do consumers want?
What are the problems the existing products solve?
Or
What problems are not getting solved?
All this know-how comes into market intelligence.

4. Marketing Strategy.
A way to communicate with people.
Where are they?
How will you approach them?
How will you get their attention?
Indicate who's interested or not?
How are going to find them?
What does someone interested do?
Where do you hand off to the sales team?
What's the marketing strategy?
Is there a process?
How are going to share your message with the world?

5. Sales Strategy & Skills.
These are similar. Sales Skills + Sales Strategy.
If you have the wrong strategy, the best salesperson might fail regardless.
But, even if you have a great strategy.
If the person has no sales skills, they may not be able to execute it.
Those 2 things are similar.
It's a gray area where the sales strategy ends & the sales skills begin.
Vice versa.
The good news is, marketing hands off to sales.
It can guide your strategy.
How those 2 have to play.

6. Money Management.
Poor management of funds can kill a business.
Even if you have great funding behind you.
If it's mismanaged, it will not work out.
Money to a business is like gasoline to a car.
It helps fuel where you want to go.
For example:
Money will fix repairs.
It will pay to bring in new people.
Pay for equipment.
Pay for access to an event/person, or intellectual property.
Money management is critically important.

7. Business Operations.
Training schedules. Meeting rhythms.
Planning sessions.
Where is all your documentation on how you do what you do?
Is there documentation?
Human resources.
All the glue holding things together.
Consider business operations as the glue between things.
For example:
If you have to abide by certain laws. Like government regulation.
That's part of the operations for your business.
That's a function you need to do to operate.
It's like manners.
Manners are the grease between human interactions.
They eliminate friction.
Manners help reduce friction in human interactions.
This is what business operations are for.
It's the grease in the wheels.
Does management meet once a year?
Is it productive?

How far behind will you fall if you're only meeting once a year?
Versus every week.
When you hire people, how do you hire them?
Is there an onboarding process?
Those are all under operations.
Are you legally compliant?
Etc..

8. Business Intelligence.
These are the feedback loops to update you on how you're doing.
They track leading & lagging factors.
For example, everyone wants to track sales.
Sales are important, but customer satisfaction is also important.
Customer satisfaction can lead to repeat sales & referrals.
Meaning, customer satisfaction would come before repeat sales & referrals.
Therefore, customer satisfaction would be a leading factor.
Sales the lagging factor.
How many repeat sales do you get?
How many referrals do you get?
Business intelligence is about the feedback you're getting.
Do people like your content?
Are they engaging?
Are customers happy?
How are your staff?
Business intelligence is all those things.
It's about being able to hold up a mirror.
See yourself how the world sees you.

Those are the 8 factors. It's a brief overview.
If you would like to know more about the 8 Critical Success Factors go to BestBusinessCoach.ca.

You'll also see more videos to questions like this.
My goal is to answer a thousand questions just like this.
So, go to BestBusinessCoach.ca.

Redefine Grind, High Performance, and What Success is on Your Own Terms with Ed O’Keefe

Every business owner wants to create a successful business, but we all have different perspectives of what success is. It’s not just about reaching certain numbers, but about how you’re getting there. If strategies are not sustainable, then it’s eventually going to lead to burnout and more frustrations.

At the end of this podcast, entrepreneurs and leaders will be able to start redefining what grind, high performance, and success mean to them. Our guest Ed O’Keefe shares his tips on building a successful business where you will thrive. We also talk about changing mindsets, surrounding yourself with ambitious and driven people, and building a strong foundation to grow a habit.

Start your journey on creating business and personal success on your own terms. Tune in to this episode to learn more!

3 Reasons Why You Should Listen to This Episode

  • Understand how you can start to redefine grind and what success is.
  • Discover how you can build your foundation through learning from industry experts and personal experience.
  • Learn why it’s important to set rules and how they can reduce friction to success.

Resources

How to Redefine What is Success and Reach High Performance

Ed’s Background

  • Ed first started in nursing and eventually started becoming interested in marketing through personal development books and coaches.
  • You are free to create a life you want, and we live in an age of opportunity and abundance.
  • Don’t expect people to understand what you want when they’re not you.

Redefining Grind

  • Grind is defined as the process of destructing something into dust. The grind can also be a path to greatness.
  • Ed shares that the more he learns and breaks things down, the better he does.
  • Despite his years of experience, he still takes the time to learn from others.

Change Your Identity and Mindset

  • Identity is where a lot of things change. When you change the way you think about yourself, you can change your life.
  • Ed shared this is the foundational belief for Inspired Wear.
  • Positive affirmations can raise people’s level of consciousness and live a better life.
  • Among the shirt designs of Inspired Wear are quotes such as ‘You got this,’ and ‘be yourself.’

We Need to Solve Problems

  • Fundamentally, businesses are built to address problems. While it’s common to fill a hungry market, we have also become freer to do what we want.
  • Why waste time on a business that is not aligned with your values and interests?
  • Being lazy will not produce results; you need to keep improving and creating.
  • The things we do out of obligation are often our worst decisions.

Be Driven, Ambitious, and Passionate

  • Work on something you are passionate about that you’re willing to do until you die.
  • Be surrounded by equally ambitious and driven people who will push you to greater heights.
  • Make sure that they are dialed into what success is for you.
  • Structure and re-organize your life so that you can spend more time on your goals.

Get Your Foundations Right

  • You need to know how you’re acquiring new customers and creating a pattern of consistent ones.
  • Marketing is not just about lead generation, it’s also about profits and losses.
  • The concept is different from the application. Be willing to create an experience for customers that keep them coming back.

Looking at What Success is on Your Terms

  • There are many pathways to growth and success. To determine what success is, you need to know the sweet spot that is perfect for you and your lifestyle.
  • Do not chase after numbers that are not sustainable. Choose the long, intelligent, and nurturing path instead, even if it takes a few more years to get to what success is to you.
  • Ed shares that high performers typically need less. They already know what to do, but they just need to focus and realign themselves.
  • Decrease friction to reach what success is to you by setting your rules and expectations.
  • Be realistic with your rules, and acknowledge that they will change over time.

How to Set Rules

  • Remember that we can only set rules for what we can control. Learn to get out of your own way.
  • Break down the task so you know the different parameters involved.
  • For example, Ed shares how ad spending will ask you how much you’re willing to spend even without any clear results.
  • If you invest and you don’t meet your target based on your rules, you can stop and try another tactic.
  • It’s best that you learn the foundations of the market first.

On Using Paid Media

  • You need some type of paid strategy to boost your virality.
  • If this is paid media, look for a platform that your competitors are getting a lot of traffic from. From there, reverse engineer their process.
  • Then, you can adapt it and provide your unique adjustments.
  • Leapfrog your progress by learning from the best in the industry.
  • Consider providing enormous value to your target audience as well.

Two Powerful Quotes

“The focus is so much on the marketing that we forget that in business you have two sides of the fence: You have the profit and loss statement.”

“Assuming two guys are at the same level, and they're doing the same game plan or summit [on] this similar level, the guy with less friction is going to outperform.”

It includes a checklist containing:
-Supplies.
-Equipment.
 -Data backups.
-Data locations.
-Resources.
_Inventories.
- Who are the admins?
- What's their contact information?
- Who are the emergency responders?
- Who are the key personnel and what are their responsibilities?
- What's the threat matrix?
- What else do you have to worry about?
- What are the critical process you have to protect?
- Who can declare a company emergency/disaster?
-Is there an evacuation facility?
-What's the communication plan?

All of these go in a continuity plan.
It's about preparation & planning for the worst-case scenario in advance.

Like a fire escape plan.
You don't make the plan when the building's on fire.
You want to have a plan in place before.

It means taking time and role-playing different possible scenarios.
The good news is:
You don't need to worry about 101 things.
Typically, there are only a handful of things. 1-10.
You can plan for them over time.
Then review it on a regular basis.
Getting the key people involved.
Then pick a scenario to role-play what might happen in the future.
The possible actions you should take.
[whenever anything unexpected happens.]

As you role-play and walking you'll identify more scenarios to expect.

Brainstorm as much as you can.
Talk to other people.
Get resources you need ready.
And finally, come up with your business continuity plan.
It's not important until it is.
By then, it might be too late.

It's a good idea to schedule time to think about it.
It's like a resource file where you keep a list of the important things.
Your intellectual property, any legal contracts, or agreements.
All that stuff.

If something unexpected happens,
What would you do?
If the main people in charge disappear?
Is there a sacred knowledge problem?
Are there critical things no one else has any idea how to do?
You have to find out what those are.
Get that documentation written down.

Make it easy to know:
Where is it?
Who is responsible for what?
How to contact the people involved?
If you can't do it/find it, what do you do then?

How To Monitor A Strategic Plan? Strategic Planning

How To Monitor A Strategic Plan? Strategic Planning

See 1 of 100 New Videos on this topic & more.

In fact, our research specifically proves 8 Critical Success Factors for small & medium-sized businesses.

Visit www.BestBusinessCoach.ca for more info.

Or https://www.members.bestbusinesscoach.ca/success-research/ for more on the research behind it.

Transcript:

You get what you inspect.
Monitoring a strategic plan is setting up regular review points.
Is it weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually?
While keeping an eye out for opportunities.

You have to determine:
How effective is the plan so far?
Are we allocating resources according to the plan?
Are you getting the results you hoped for?

It is about how you monitor.
You have to put measurements in place.
This is where Business Intelligence comes into play.

We have identified 8 Critical Success Factors
8 things significant to the success of small & medium-sized businesses.

One of them is Business Intelligence.
This is a video for strategic planning,
But monitoring you strategic plan includes Business Intelligence Systems.
The feedback loops.

Like I've said, to have a regular review.
You need feedback loops.
These include:
1. Lagging Factors.
2. Leading Factors.
Measurements on key performance indicators.

It means:
For example, let's say you determine success based on sales.
Sales are a lagging factor, because a lot of work happens.
Before you get the sale.

So in this example you'd include leading factors.
These might be:
Engagement on your ads.
Are people + or - engaging with it?
Do they love it & share it with others?
Another one is client satisfaction.
Client satisfaction creates word of mouth, referrals, and repeat sales.
BUT you have to satisfy them BEFORE they give you those.

So satisfaction would be a leading factor, whereas, the sale would come after. [lagging factor].

So, how do you monitor a strategic plan?
You have to set up business intelligence feedback loops.
You have to have tracking in place.
And regularly review progress.
Check if the plan is on track.
Or not.
That is how you review a strategy.

Like the analogy of a road trip,
It would be easy if you have a map.
With your destination and your current place marked.
If it's tracked, it's easier for you to look at where you are, and measure:
Are we on the right track?
How long will it take to get there?
What is our process?

You can create all sorts of tools to check your progress.
To monitor productivity.
Overall, it's setting up feedback loops & monitoring leading & lagging factors.

You need to know how you can form a connection with your ideal customers. You should also make sure that they choose you over your competitors.

In today’s episode, Jon Reyes tackles both issues that these freelancers and entrepreneurs face. He discusses the fundamentals of writing a copy, business, and entrepreneurship in general. He also talks about the biggest challenges he faced, as well as the habits he developed to succeed.

What does a copywriter do to create effective marketing strategies? How does writing a copy capture your target market, and how do you connect with them? Stay tuned to learn more about Jon’s time-tested and effective strategies that freelancers and entrepreneurs will surely benefit from.

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Discover the things you need to do when you start out in business.

Episode Highlights

How Jon Got Started in Sales and Marketing for Business

  • Growing up, Jon did not have a background in business.
  • Over time, he developed self-esteem issues. He felt inferior and didn’t think he was smart, resulting in social anxiety.
  • Jon decided to rebuild and reinvent himself into someone he liked. He wanted to do something important in his life.
  • He graduated with a degree in advertising and a minor in psychology. He wanted to find a job in sales but ended up not liking it.
  • As Jon was exploring opportunities, he came across internet marketing and copywriting.

Challenges in Writing a Copy

  • Jon likens copywriting to public speaking.
  • When he was starting out, he was second-guessing his writing and unfamiliar with the business world.
  • To address this issue, Jon resolved to get good at writing a copy.
  • Jon also values good fundamentals. Through this, he can stay sharp and focused in the industry.

If You Are Starting Out or Struggling in Writing a Copy

  • As a freelancer, your skill set should match your rates.
  • Hone your skill set by doing free projects, keeping a portfolio, and gaining testimonies.
  • This way, you can serve the world of business and keep yourself humble.
  • Never sell yourself short. Remember to keep the balance between knowing your worth and being humble.
  • You also need to take time to learn new things and build your skills. This is true for all practices.

Writing a Copy: Habits That Jon Developed Throughout His Career

  • If you are new to a business, you need to understand your target market.
  • After this, figure out how you can connect to your market.
  • Form a human-to-human connection with your audience. Tell the story in a way that speaks to people’s pain points.
  • If you can move people through words and win them over, that’s how you build a longer-term following.
  • For Jon, you have to understand the crowd you are selling to. Know what their motivations and pain points are before you start writing a copy.

The Importance of an Outside Perspective

  • If you’re marketing something that you are passionate about, chances are you’ll be too focused on the good points.
  • When you fall into this trap you don’t see the perspective of your target market anymore.
  • So you need outside expertise to connect the dots between your perspective and your target’s.
  • Coaches can also help you bring out your potential.
  • Remember that there is always going to be someone better than us, no matter how good we get at anything.

Situations Where Jon Does His Best Work

  • Jon works best at influencer marketing, personal growth, and self-help.
  • He sometimes works in the health and fitness space as well.
  • In everything he does, he works the best with someone who believes in what they sell.
  • Jon also looks for scalability when working with companies.
  • He cannot work with people who sell and/or market an inferior product or service.

How to Work with Jon

  • Jon gets prospects from his extensive connections.

  • You can also reach out to him on social media.
  • Before working with someone new, Jon makes sure that they’re a good fit.
  • He does this because he prefers to build relationships.

Two Powerful Quotes

“You should never sell yourself short and always know your worth. But you have to remember that there is that balance between marketing and selling yourself and that confidence in your skillset.”

“How can you connect to someone through writing or even through a video script that makes them feel like you're talking just to them? So it's kind of a unique dialling in, a unique message.”
